25 Days of omg.lol

Day 16

Something totally different today! omg.lol has members from all over the world, and lately I’ve been thinking that it would be fun to have a map where we could see all of the neat places where people are from. So, I made one!

It’s super easy to use. When you visit the map, if you’re logged in, you can plop a pin anywhere and save it. If you’re not logged in, you can browse the map but can’t change anything. If you have more than one address associated with your omg.lol account, you can choose which address you want to show when someone clicks your pin. That’s pretty much it!

I am keenly aware that this isn’t going to be for everyone, and that is A-OK. There is no pressure to use this at all. And on that note, let me be clear about a few privacy and safety matters:

  1. First, you’re always in control of your pin location, and you can remove yourself from the map at any time.
  2. I’ve capped the map zoom level such that you can’t get to a level of detail that shows buildings or houses, so this kinda tries to make it hard for you to accidentally dox yourself by design.
  3. This should go without saying, but don’t plop your pin on a sensitive location. This isn’t about making it easy for people to find you; it’s just a way to say “I’m in Svalbard.” So a pin anywhere near Svalbard works.

With that, free to check out the omg.lol member map!

Back to the usual weblog stuff tomorrow (the features are still baking and one of them should be ready soon). See you then!
